Virtual training remains in high demand
Corporate virtual training has become a must-have for companies in a cross-section of industries. In the last two years, virtual and remote training has expanded for a number of reasons, including pandemic-related factors.
A McKinsey survey on reskilling conducted in 2021 revealed an urgent need to address the widening skills gap reported in many industries. “The urgency of addressing skill gaps is clear—and, across industries, more important than ever to do,” they stated in their report. Along with organizations looking to reskill their existing employees, job seekers are looking for employers that will provide them with learning and skill-building opportunities.
Virtual corporate learning grew during the pandemic, although the vast majority of programs were conducted remotely by necessity. But the demand for robust and effective virtual training programs is expected to continue. According to the Technology Services and Industry Association (TSIA), virtual instructor-led training saw increases in growth in both 2020 and 2021. TSIA defines virtual instructor-led training as “A live, synchronous event that includes the use of web-conferencing technology.”
Not all remote training experiences are equal, though. The most effective virtual learning programs combine a mixture of technologies.
Combining tools and technology for virtual training success
The most effective virtual learning programs are engaging and positive learning experiences that also provide enough flexibility to reach more participants. Successful approaches involve a combination of advanced tools used to create a dynamic learning experience that replicates the qualities of a live and fully interactive classroom experience.
The foundation of an effective virtual learning program involves a robust and secure video conferencing system that allows for live interaction of instructors and participants. High-quality virtual learning programs typically also incorporate a learning management system or solution that offers flexibility and that can meet specialized needs, such as enhanced security measures.
For example, Progressive Expert Consulting, Inc. (PEC), a training and technology company, has pioneered concepts in both synchronous and asynchronous training to provide brick-and-mortar learning in a virtual setting. To create a platform solution that would meet the stringent requirements of training for the U.S. Department of Defense, including the Special Operations Forces Teletraining System (SOFTS), PEC partnered with Lumicademy and incorporated their secure video conferencing platform. PEC needed “a platform solution that we could control and would also meet our stringent requirements for military-grade security.” They noted that “It has to be private, so we can choose how and where to install any modules as well as pass the critical encryption requirements for sensitive operations.”
Lumicademy’s video conferencing platform offers comprehensive security features including “the ability to control everything for the user — from top-level video and audio controls, security of the classroom, right down to the control of devices utilized on each workstation.” PEC also noted that Lumicademy also provides secure sharing of sensitive content such as documents, files, and recordings that cannot be streamed over the public internet or stored in uncontrolled cloud data centers.
Tools to create a better virtual learning experience
The key to virtual learning success is offering participants more than a lecture or meeting notes from an instructor. Virtual learning programs that include highly engaging activities and methods result in better experiences and learning outcomes for participants.
Advanced video conferencing software with superior quality video and audio can be used to create high-quality learning experiences such as:
- Dynamic and interactive sessions that include face-to-face interaction in real-time with other participants and instructors
- Live synchronous video instruction to virtual classroom participants, replicating elements of an in-person classroom experience
- Small group breakout sessions to enhance discussion and workgroups
- Real-time Q&A sessions and discussions with instructors and other class participants
- One-on-one video conferencing with instructors that allow for detailed discussions and immediate feedback
Advanced video solutions that support additional collaboration can offer an even more dynamic and engaging training experience. Some effective collaboration tools include the following:
- Whiteboard, annotation and screen sharing apps
- Chat and messaging apps
- Document sharing and collaboration tools
Additional tools and features can be incorporated to add more opportunities for feedback, communication, and engagement. Popular options include apps for polls and interactive quizzes.
Video conferencing platforms can also connect and integrate with other business communications tools, such as Slack, to offer additional seamless collaboration.
